"Baby in bloom" Watercolor weekend!

Sometimes the most meaningful moments at an event come together in the most unexpected ways. In the middle of last week, I received a last-minute inquiry from a lovely woman named Lizzette. She was planning a baby shower for her daughter, who was traveling in from New Jersey to celebrate with family in Virginia Beach.

One of the things her daughter had dreamed of for the shower was having a watercolor artist paint guest sketches, and Lizzette had been thoughtfully working hard to find someone who might be available. But, after reaching out to a few artists and not hearing back, time was beginning to run out and she wasn’t sure if it would be possible.

That’s when she connected with me (at Vivid Expressions) through the team at East Beach Catering and their private event venue, The Black Oak. Their willingness to help their client find the right creative partners made it possible for this special detail to come to life.

When I arrived, the mother-to-be shared that having a watercolor artist was the one thing she had truly hoped for at the shower. Once the first brushstrokes began, the table stayed busy all afternoon as guests casually mingled nearby, waiting their turn while fresh watercolor illustrations dried beside me.

For event hosts, couples, and planners, don’t hesitate to ask your venue about creative referrals. Many venues have wonderful relationships with artists and creatives who can bring unique experiences to your celebration.

And for venues and planners, collaborations like this are a beautiful reminder that when creative professionals work together, the result is an experience guests will never forget.

The value of time

This experience also highlighted something that is easy to overlook in the creative industry.  Sometimes one of the most valuable things we can offer is simply responsiveness. When clients are planning meaningful milestones (weddings, showers, celebrations, and gatherings), they are often navigating dozens of moving pieces. A timely response, a willingness to explore possibilities, and a spirit of collaboration can make all the difference.

Creativity may be the service we provide, but reliability and responsiveness are often what truly build trust and lasting relationships in the event world.
